Helping Less Fortunate Kids Enjoy the Hobby

I just wanted to draw your attention to this current post within the Editor's Blog on the Sports Collectors Daily main site. Not only do I offer a recommendation for the 2009 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards which I just bought last night, but I want to encourage everyone to participate in something that's easy, will help the long-term future of the hobby and make you and your gift recipient feel really good.

There are thousands of kids who are sports fans and would like to be collectors, but their families simply can't afford to buy them a pack of cards, let alone a box. Before the holidays, stop for a moment and buy a box of cards (it doesn't have to be an expensive box, but if you can afford a good one, great) and donate it to your local Salvation Army, Toy Town or other charity that helps families at this time of year. Baseball cards aren't a necessity, of course, but they are important to kids who want to do what other kids do. We forget, too, that cards can be educational. How many of you learned math through the stats on the back of your cards? Read the blog and then hop on eBay or go to your local shop and buy a box for a kid who may otherwise never get the chance to have the thrill of tearing open a box of baseball cards to see what's inside.

As the guy who launched this sports collectors social network, I apologize for not doing a little more to market it. I still think it's a great concept and hope you'll continue to participate. Recruit a collecting friend or two and participate--- it will grow in time. It's a great concept but we need people to be active and willing to blog, chat or upload a few photos once in awhile. It could really be a lot of fun.
